MISSION STATEMENT

As a church we seek to:

provide worship which is open and accessible to all and to nurture those coming to faith;

restructure our premises to make them more suitable for the present and future needs of both church and community;

seek ways of serving the community taking into account the needs of the locality;

move towards greater unity with the South Group and encourage each other to grow in Christ;

extend our commitment to those working for a fairer world.

About Our Church

It is difficult to introduce people to the present life of our Church without saying a little bit about the past.

Dore & Totley Union Church was founded in 1888 when a group of Christian friends living in the area decided to establish a Church open to people from different denominations.

The new Church became a place where people could be sure of a welcome whatever their views might be about particular doctrinal issues. This continues today.

In 1972 we became part of the United Reformed Church (URC) which has been described as the least 'denominational' denomination. Part of the vision of the URC is to pray and work 'for such visible unity of the whole Church as Christ wills and in the way He wills, in order that people and nations may be led more and more to glorify the Father in Heaven.'

Today we continue to have members from all backgrounds.

The Way Forward

This is the most exciting development in the life of Dore & Totley URC for many years. Having "caught the vision" we are engaged in a project to

restructure our entire premises. The first stage is in hand and involves realising part of our assets (a piece of land) and using the proceeds to turn

our sanctuary into a user-friendly, multi purpose building. Our aim is to encourage people with little or no church background to discover that this is a comfortable environment in which they can learn of God's loving purpose.

The second stage will see the complete renovation of the ageing church hall to provide modern rooms better suited to the varied range of current activities and future needs.

We are conscious that this must go hand-in-hand with new ways of being church, so that we can bring Christ to the community and a wider community to Christ. Is there a call for flexible worship patterns in terms of style, liturgy and choice of day and time? We seek to engage with people where they are now.
